A Participant not an Observer

Updated: Mar 9, 2021

My personal commentary on the following portion of scripture.

Hebrews 2:

11 For both he that sanctifies and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,

12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.

13 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.

14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

16 For verily he 5 took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

17 Wherefore in all things it behooved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

This participant is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ himself. He took part of the same flesh and blood existence as the children of God. To participate, and yet be different in stature, in wisdom, and in favour with God and man, is what makes this one standout amongst the others. He overcame temptation by the devil and the world of sinful people. He lived a set apart life. He did not compromise the standard or break the commandments.

This participation in flesh and blood was done for:

  1. Deliverance from: a) the devil; b) fear of death (v 14),

  2. Making reconciliation for the sins of the people (v 17),

  3. Succour them to overcome temptation.

It is encouraging to know that there is someone who is more than an observer. He is merciful and faithful in things pertaining to God. If you need help to overcome temptation, he is able to succour you with knowledge and strength for the fight. He differs from the household gods people worship, who are distant and impersonal. People serve them in fear of their curses rather than their benevolence.
